Regulation Resources

These regulation resources links are likely to be useful to other radiation protection advisers, regulators, clients and visitors. The resources include direct links to downloadable Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Environment Agency (EA) and Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) application forms and guidance, Exemption Orders and other useful information that we will post from time to time.

You will note that there is much change at present so the links provided are likely to change from time to time and may lead to dead links. Whilst there have always been some differences between England and Wales, and Scottish radioactive substances regulation, those differences are more considerable now. The Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (RSA93) is substantially repealed in England & Wales (with one or two provisions remaining) – replaced by the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010 (EPR 2010). The RSA93 still remains the central piece of radioactive substance regulation in Scotland.

Furthermore, in England and Wales the Environmental Agency still appear to be in the progress of ‘implementing’ elements of EPR2010 – at least with respect to guidance. Therefore you will still see links in this section which provide guidance and documents made by the EA under RSA93 – these are provided because they are relevant and still on the EA website and / or because we still feel they provide useful information (where there is no direct replacement available). An example of this is the RAS Guidance Documents (Chapters 1 & 3) which were made for regulation under RSA93.

You will note that the Exemption Order (EO) page still contains the complete range of EO’s – some of which date back to 1963. We understand that the EA will be making amendments to EPR2010 to incorporate a new set of EO’s (or perhaps just one EO to deal with all exemption issues).
