Police CBRN Radiation Protection Course

Police CBRN Radiation Protection Training by Ionactive
‘The R & N in CBRN’

Ionactive Consulting will be running a number of CBRN radiation protection courses during 2008 for the UK Police Force. Each will last for 3 days and most likely take place at Police Training Centres. Full course details will appear on a dedicated training page shortly, in the meantime this news release provides information on what to expect.

The course, entitled the ‘R and N in CBRN’, will provide radiation protection training to the recognised standard of a Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS). Our aim is to provide the police with an innovative, rewarding and cost effective course which is a real alternative to what is currently available in the market place.

Day 1 covers the basics of radiation protection and at every opportunity presents this information in a CBRN context (i.e. using sources likely to be involved in such events).

Day 2 homes in on more specific CBRN issues - case studies and table top exercises will be used liberally to allow the delegates to use their acquired knowledge immediately (it’s also a fun way to present the material).

Day 3 will address source security and transport before the main table top exercise of the course commences ‘The Dirty Bomb’.

The following list presents some examples of course content (this is only selection from the complete course syllabus):

1) Nature of ionising radiation, principles of radiation protection (Day 1)
2) Internal / External hazards from Radiation / Contamination (Day 1)
3) Biological effects and radiological risk (Day 1)
4) Radiation Instrumentation for the UK CBRN Response (Day 2)
5) Demonstration and Hands On use of Current CBRN Radiation Monitoring Equipment using the Home Office Approved List of equipment (Day 2)
6) Communicating Radiation Risk to the Public and Colleagues (Day 2)
7) Tabletop Exercise on Hazard, Risk and Controls for the Emergency Services (Day 2)
8) Transport of Radioactive Materials and how this applies to CBRN (Day 3)
9) Project Cyclamen and how it applies to the Emergency Services (Day 3)
10) Table Top Exercise: ‘The Dirty Bomb’ (Day 3)

The course fees are provisional at this stage but are likely to be around £5000 plus VAT for a block booking of between 10-16 police delegates. The fee structure may move towards a ‘per delegate’ basis but will remain competitive. We believe the fee structure and cost effectiveness is another unique aspect of our course.

Each delegate will also receive a comprehensive colour printed workbook and achievement certificate (following completion of the course assessment on Day 3).

One course is already planned for early next year at a Police Training Centre. We also have significant interest already from several police forces. Please register your interest with Mark Ramsay at mark.ramsay@ionactive.co.uk
