Environmental Protection Manager Post
Imperial College London will, over the next five years, decommission Consort, its small low power research reactor at Silwood Park Campus, near Ascot, Berkshire. To support this project we seek an individual who can help us set a new industry benchmark for environmental performance.
The successful candidate will work within a team of professional engineers managing this small Nuclear Licensed Site and be responsible for:
• Discharge measurements, waste management and radiation protection.
• Liaison with regulatory authorities particularly the Environment Agency and Nuclear Installations Inspectorate.
• The environmental and radiation protection input to local Emergency Arrangement, RADSAFE and NAIR plans and representing Imperial College at relevant external meetings.
• Safety duties upto and including that of Emergency Controller.
The candidate will make a significant contribution to the management of the decommissioning project.
Applicants should have worked as a Qualified Expert and/or RPA2000. Experience of IRR99 and RSA93 issue on sites working with radioactive materials, including applying for discharge authorisations and involvement in decommissioning projects is an advantage.
Decommissioning Consort will, compared to larger sites, take a relatively short time and so this is a unique opportunity to gain experience of all aspects of nuclear decommissioning from early consultation through to site remediation. As the project is part of an academic institution, rather than a commercial company, there will be opportunities to publish the best environmental practice developed.
The successful candidate will be joining a closely knit team at one of Europe’s leading universities. They will have the benefits of a long term contract and a competitive remuneration package.
