Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) & RPS Training

Ionactive is an established, significant and unique provider of Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) services for all users of ionising radiation. We operate from the UK providing radiation protection advice to industry, commerce, regulators, museums, universities and schools.



We offer independent professional advice, and as a 'non RPA Body', you will always be advised by a fully certificated RPA. We also meet the general definition of 'Qualified Expert' (QE) as used internationally for expert advice in radiation safety.


Radiation Protection Adviser for a broad range of sources 

In the UK we provide advice to clients who range from the smallest to the largest users of ionising radiation. Our advice covers x-ray sources of all energy types (i.e. research machines, quality assurance, baggage security systems, cargo scanners, sterilisation / industrial processing, linacs and synchrotrons). We are usually appointed under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999 (IRR99) which defines the matters for which we must be consulted.

Our advice for radioactive material users ranges from the small school source to the highest activity sources (i.e.  radiometric gauges, nuclear research reactors, gamma irradiation facilities). Our advice therefore also covers the Environmental Permitting (England & Wales) Regulations 2010, the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 (in Scotland) and transport regulations. We also provide RPA advice for users of NORM (naturally occuring radioactive materials).

Outside the UK we provide an international radiation training service and offer advisory services as a Qualified Expert.


Practical Radiation Protection Services

To complement our advisory role Ionactive also provides the complete range of practical services including radiation and contamination monitoring, onsite gamma spectrometry, leak testing, risk assessment, contingency planning, monitor testing, critical examinations and decommissioning support.
